In this series, Rabbi Aaron introduces us to teshuva, returning to relationship with Hashem, through the first few chapters of Rabbi Kook’s book, Orot HaTeshuva (The Lights of Return). While relevant all year long, we especially recommend these classes during the months of Elul and Tishrei, before and during the high holy days.

Teshuva 1: Intro to Teshuva

In the introduction to Orot HaTeshuva, Rabbi Kook expresses the pressing need he feels to teach about teshuvah in a language uniquely suited to the needs of this generation. Rabbi Aaron explains to us the importance of teshuva and what it can do for us.

Teshuva 2: Levels of Motivation 1

Here, we learn about the two levels of natural teshuva: physical and spiritual. What place do pain and sickness have in the process of natural teshuva? After the natural phase is achieved, what is the next level?

Teshuva 3: Levels of Motivation 2

Rabbi Aaron brings Rabbi Kook and the Rambam to explain the importance of Love as being the highest motivation in a Jew’s service towards his Creator. Faith and Nature are also crucial motivators to attaining teshuva. The question is, “Am seeking to bond with or be in bondage to Hashem?”

Teshuva 4: Sudden and Gradual Teshuva

Teshuva can happen in a transformative instant or in a slow, gradated process over time. Here, Rabbi Kook explores the differences between these two modes of teshuva and their respective benefits.

Teshuva 5: Particularized and General Teshuva

Here Rabbi Aaron illuminates Rabbi Kook’s explanation of focusing one’s teshuva on one particular sin versus teshuva on an entire group or category of sins. He then expands on the details of this type of teshuva process and its healing benefits.
