Listen up Israel! Come explore the two opening phrases and three following paragraphs that comprise the Shema, with Rabbi Aaron. These four classes will help us call out and hear a little bit better.

Shema Yisrael, pt1 – The Shema

Rabbi Aaron dives right into “Shema Yisrael…” and the following verse, “Baruch Shem…” He looks at Hashem as both a lover and judge, and at Oneness and multiplicity, How could so much depth and meaning be packed into two short phrases?

Shema Yisrael, pt2 – With All Your Heart

The fundamental mitzvah to love Hashem is expressed in the first paragraph, and the way to develop this loving relationship is actually through doing the mitzvot with your heart, your soul, and your material means. Rabbi Aaron explains the power of doing Hashem’s mitzvot even when a logical rationale for them is not clear.

Shema Yisrael, pt3 – The 2nd Paragraph

The Shema’s 2nd paragraph addresses communal responsibility, and its basic innovation is the idea of reward and punishment. At first glance, the rewards promised to Jews if they follow Hashem’s path seems a bit disappointing, but when looked at closely they are foundational to a healthy spiritual life.

Shema Yisrael, pt4 – Love of the Land of Israel

Hashem gave the Land of Israel to the Jewish people, and there is a special presence, unattainable in any other land, that this gift can offer to every Jew. The 3rd paragraph of the Shema describes this crucial relationship between the Land of Israel, Hashem, and the Jewish people.
