Reflections
from a 2008 Avraham HaLevi Isralight Rabbinic Fellowship Participant
The Torah says, “And these are the
children of Aaron and Moshe….And these are the names
of Aaron’s sons…. (Bemidbar 3:1,2)
Why does the initial verse refer to these “children”
as both the children of Moses and Aaron, while the next verse
clarifies that we are speaking specifically of Aaron’s
children?
Rashi explains: “And they are called Moses’
children because he taught them Torah, the verse comes to
teach us that through the teaching of Torah, it was as if
they were his actual progeny…”
I spent this last week being “born”, and the tremendous
hakarat hatov I feel cannot be reduced to a few lines on paper.
There’s no way to describe the sweetness of chocolate
that will truly relay the true experience of actually eating
it.
After the painful labour pains of doubt, the only outcome
is a birth of new ideas that drive home the beauty and purpose
of our lives.
Isralight and the rabbeim, specifically Rabbi Aaron and Rav
Binny have given me this new lease on life. Thank you!
Also to Rav Moish Kornblum for introducing me to the program,
thinking about me and inviting me.
Acharon, acharon chaviv to Rav Shor, the creator
of this fantastic program. Through his vision and efforts,
thousands will be affected through this growing network of
rabbis and educators….

Reflections
from the Summer 2008 Isralight Rabbinic Internship
 |
Dear
Friends,
It
is my pleasure to share with you a sampling of the positive
feedback we've received from numerous participants in
our recent summer rabbinic internship. As the letters
below indicate we were blessed to study with and inspire
an outstanding group of young and promising future rabbinic
talent.
With
warmest blessings from Jerusalem ,

My
name is Jonny Gordon. I was born and raised in Montreal
and currently live in Jerusalem with my wife and daughter.
I am a 3rd year semicha student studying at Yeshiva
University 's RIETS Israel Kollel in Jerusalem .
Being
a part of the Isralight Summer Internship has truly
been a life-changing experience.
The
topics and ideas shared and discussed throughout the
two-week long internship have filled a huge need that
unfortunately is not addressed by most modern-day semicha
programs. The problem is that the biggest issues Jewish
educators have to deal with today are not included in
most modern-day semicha curriculums since many are designed
for the needs of previous generations. Dozens of ordained
Rabbis are leaving the walls of the Beit Midrash each
year with a solid foundation in Halacha, but without
a grasp of the most crucial issues that will come up
during their career as a Jewish educator! Jews of all
ages, backgrounds and denominations are searching for
meaning and purpose in their lives. Many Jews are unfortunately
looking outside their own faith for meaning after finding
no answers to their questions in their own religion.
One of the major reasons for this lack of answers is
that Jewish educators were never taught to think about
these fundamental issues themselves!
The
Isralight Summer Internship was designed to fix this
problem, and for me it has done exactly that. While
only so much could be accomplished in a two- week span,
Rabbi David Aaron and Rav Binny Freedman's wisdom and
guidance has inspired me to begin to seriously explore
such fundamental issues as our relationship to God,
Jewish suffering and the purpose of prayer. Rav Binny
also shared with the group many of his teaching methodologies,
both inside and outside of the classroom. Rabbi Aaron
and Rav Binny are exceptional models of what true Jewish
educators are and should be. Both are warm and approachable
and helped guide me personally in defining my career
goals. I feel that every semicha student should seriously
consider applying for the Isralight Summer Internship.
If you have decided that your life mission is to help
Jews grow spiritually and help them create a meaningful
connection with Judaism, then there are no better mentors
to prepare you for a successful and happy life in Jewish
education than Rabbi Aaron and Rav Binny. In my mind,
there is no better program than the Isralight Summer
Internship to prepare you for a life in Jewish education.

My
name is Victor Haim Gheriani. I am currently a rabbinical
student at the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary
of Yeshiva University, and a graduate student at the
Azrieli School of Jewish Education. I have previously
worked professionally for UBS Financial Services and
serve as youth coordinator and synagogue Cantor for
the Sefardic Congregation Magen David of West Deal,
New Jersey .
For
the past three years, I have been focusing on the study
of Talmud and Halacha. Specifically I have dealt with
the intricate laws of Kashrut, Mourning, and Family
Purity. I felt however that there was something lacking
in my education, the essential core ideas of Judaism
simply were not discussed.
As
an Isralight Summer Rabbinic Intern, I am extremely
grateful for the recent educational experience. Rabbi
Aaron , Rabbi Freedman, Rabbi Shor and Rabbi Wolfe have
introduced me to a new way of thinking as a rabbi living
in the 21st Century.
As
a result of this program, I am interested to explore
the teachings of Rav Kook and various essential Jewish
Sources to help enable me to reach and inspire both
the more experienced student as well as the novice.
As
I shared with each of the members of the educational
staff, this program was "life transforming," for me!
With Hashem's help, I plan to utilize all we have gained
these past two weeks in my work in Jewish education
with youth and adults.

In
my second year of Semicha studies at Yeshiva University
I was searching for a refreshing, energetic approach
to studying Jewish philosophy, methodology and mysticism,
which I found whilst studying at the Isralight Rabbinic
Internship. The two weeks that I spent with Isralight
were inspirational and insightful. Rabbi Aaron , Rabbi
Freedman and Rabbi Shor built not only a firm foundation
for me to begin my teaching career but also opened my
mind to many new ideas and approaches in the world of
Jewish education. My deep passion to educate and inspire
Jewish teenagers for many years to come has moved one
step closer to reality with the tools that I learned
from the special Rabbis at Isralight. The opportunity
to spend two weeks in the Old City of Jerusalem, with
12 peers who share the same passions as I, and to study
and debate the most essential issues that the Jewish
world faces is a unique one. It is something I would
highly recommend to anyone who is planning on working
within the world of Jewish education, whether as a Synagogue
Rabbi or a Jewish educator.
The
Isralight internship has become a fundamental experience
that I look forward to utilizing and building on.

As
a current part time educator in Ramaz Middle School
and the Edmond J. Safra Synagogue I always seek pedagogy,
content and new educational paradigms to better educate
my students. The two week educational experience at
Isralight introduced an extraordinary framework to life,
outreach and most importantly traditional Judaism. The
studies of Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook, traditional Kabbala
and Hassidut were truly eye opening and heart warming.
The
love of Judaism, which clearly was expressed by the
educators, Rabbi David Aaron , Rabbi Binyamin Freedman
and Rabbi Sam Shor resonated to all our hearts. It is
for certain that the Torah which they taught will be
transmitted to our students, peers and colleagues.
Coming
into the program I was unclear of who man was, who Hashem
was and what exactly our relationship really is. This
fundamental foundation of Judaism was deprived of me
as I was growing up but I am blessed with this incredible
opportunity to learn with true leaders in the world
of education. Walking away from this program I am more
confident and excited to be moving forward in the Rabbinic
world. This experience was truly equivalent to being
lifted on the shoulders of giants to see way beyond
anywhere we have been able to see before.
Thank
you for this transformational experience. I hope this
is the beginning of an everlasting relationship.

After
studying in Yeshiva University , I worked in the Jewish
community in Chicago as a youth director NCSY leader,
and Hebrew School teacher. Seeing the need to get a
stronger background in rabbinical leadership, I came
to Israel to study in Yeshiva in order to grow as a
leader and educator.
In
addition to conventional yeshiva studies, I sought after
personalities and classes that would enhance my ability
to make an impact in the Jewish world. One place where
I found guidance and inspiration was Isralight. The
two week summer rabbinic internship opened my eyes to
a world of Jewish thought that I previously had very
little interaction with! I feel that in two weeks I
gained more confidence and insights to be used in Jewish
education than I amassed over the course of an entire
year in Yeshiva.
Each
member of the Isralight rabbinic staff has a very unique
and palatable approach, and show a true love for what
they teach, and who they teach! I look forward to putting
my newly gained skills and inspiration into practice
when I seek a position in Jewish education.

New
Orleans Mitzvah Mission 2008
"Healing
a Broken Community"
Over
the past several years many valued friendships and partnerships
have developed through the networking, learning and conferences
offered to rabbis through Isralight's Leadership Training
Institute and
our Avraham HaLevi Isralight Rabbinic Enrichment Fellowship.
Among those many special young rabbis who have come to make
up our extended family are Rabbis Uri Topolosky of Congregation
Beth Israel in New Orleans , LA and Rabbi Aaron Goldscheider
of the Mt. Kisco (NY) Hebrew Congregation.
Rav
Uri and his wife Dr. Dahlia Topolosky, have been part of our
Isralight global community for many years- staffing Israel
trips, retreats and leading kumsitzes and classes. Following
several years as part of the team of clergy at the Hebrew
Institute of Riverdale, Rav Uri and Rebbetzin Dahlia
together with their two young sons, relocated this past year
to assist in the rebuilding of the hurricane ravaged and largely
displaced Jewish community in New Orleans .
Rabbi
Aaron Goldscheider
will be bringing a contigent from our partner synagogue the
Mt. Kisco Hebrew Congregation to visit New Orleans this coming
weekend. The group plans to arrive in New Orleans
on Thursday evening March 27 th . Friday will be spent volunteering
in rebuilding efforts, as well as participating in a group
visit together with Rav Uri to the destroyed Beth Israel Synagogue
building, once the largest Orthodox synagogue in New Orleans
.
Shabbat
will be celebrated with Rav Uri and Rebbetzin Dahlia
and their congregation in their temporary location,
followed by a musical havdala with Rav Uri. On Sunday the
group will complete its Mitzvah Mission with a tour the 9th
Ward and see first hand the scope of the destruction.
Isralight would
like to wish Rav Uri and Rebbetzin Dahlia much success
in their incredible and holy work, and salute Rabbi Goldscheider
and his group for participating in this great act of
solidarity and kindness.
